Laser Skin rejuvenation

What is Laser Skin rejuvenation?
Over the years our skin begins to show signs of the natural aging process. Overexposure to the sun, alcohol use, smoking, smiling and laughing are all well known to accelerate the development of wrinkles, lines and dark aging spots. These wrinkles are most prominently seen on the upper lip, around the eyes ("crows feet"), and superficially on the cheeks and forehead. Laser Skin rejuvenation is a procedure specially designed to dramatically soften, reduce, and very often erase the superficial and moderately deep lines, wrinkles, aging spots and acne scars. As an added benefit, skin tightening usually occurs, providing a nonsurgical mini-facelift, pores are smaller, and the new skin is rich in collagen, rejuvenating the face and literally making the patient look years younger.

How does Laser Skin rejuvenation work?
Unlike dermabrasion and chemical peels, the CO2 skin rejuvenation laser uses a very high-energy beam of light to vaporize or "erase" wrinkles, lines,
scars, brown spots and other skin defects. Laser light penetrates to a very precise, computer-controlled depth, making the procedure safe, predictable and essentially bloodless. The precision of the laser allows Dr. Conn to determine exactly how much tissue and specific areas to treat during the procedure. Laser Skin rejuvenation is gentler and more exacting than chemical peels and dermabrasion.

Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is performed with "state-of-the-art" laser equipment, usually under general anesthesia or deep sedation to ensure a pain-free procedure. However, depending on the extent of the surgery, Dr. Conn may sometimes recommend a local anesthetic approach when only limited areas of the face are resurfaced. Postoperative discomfort is usually mild, requiring little to no medications. Because pain is highly individual, Dr. Conn will make sure that you are kept comfortable during and after your laser rejuvenation procedure.

"Laser Skin rejuvenation and Laser Eyelid Surgery produces a remarkably youthful, well-rested
appearance and acts as a mini-facelift - often taking as many as 15 years off your appearance."
How long is the typical recovery?
For several days after the procedure and while the skin is rebuilding from the bottom up, weeping will occur as new collagen and skin are formed by the deep dermal layer. The fresh new skin will have a pink quality, which will generally fade over a period of approximately 3-12 weeks. This can be camouflaged by makeup, which can usually be applied about 10 days following the surgery, depending on your skins response to treatment. Following Laser Skin rejuvenation, it is very important to use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 protection against UVA and UVB rays, and to protect yourself during sun exposure for several months, as this can cause changes in pigmentation.
Are there possible complications?
As with any surgical procedure, there is always the possibility of side effects or even frank complications, and therefore all surgery must be taken seriously. The risks of Laser Skin rejuvenation are rare, but it is important our patients be advised of all potential risks. They include, but are not limited to, infection, pigmentary changes, and persistent redness, which as a rule fades over time. Some patients may experience transient spots or hyper- or hypo-pigmentation. These conditions usually resolve gradually, depending on each individual's unique pigmentation and can be treated with bleaching agents. Permanent loss of pigmentation and infections are rare. Antibiotics are given at the time of surgery to further guard against infection. Dr. Conn and his staff will counsel you regarding risks, alternatives and potential benefits of Laser Skin rejuvenation. It is generally recognized that Laser Skin rejuvenation has fewer potential complications than chemical peels or dermabrasion.

Should Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery be performed at the same time as Laser Skin rejuvenation?
Dr. Conn has found the combination of Laser Skin rejuvenation and Laser Eyelid Surgery produces a remarkable youthful, well-rested appearance and often acts as a mini-facelift.

The laser immediately seals blood vessels resulting in less swelling and discoloration, reducing recovery time to a matter of days. With the expertise and caring of Dr. Conn and his staff you can be assured of the most naturally, aesthetically pleasing result and a pleasant experience.
